ABOUT MARY

Mary Carmack-Altwies has spent her professional career working to address issues of safety and justice. As an attorney with an expertise in criminal law, she has seen both sides of the courtroom, working in the trenches as a public defender and running her own practice. She has served as New Mexico’s First Judicial District Attorney since January of 2021, where she has overhauled outdated systems and implemented myriad reforms to help bring justice to the community.

A graduate of University of New Mexico School of Law, Mary lives in Santa Fe with her wife, Jo, and two energetic young children. Mary holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Mount Holyoke College, has served as an adjunct professor for the UNM School of Law, and has volunteered her time for the legal needs of survivors of sexual assault and elders.
